Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

On average, a pedestrian died every 1.5 hours in traffic accidents throughout the United States in 2016.
On average, a pedestrian sustained injuries every 7.5 minutes in traffic accidents throughout the United States in 2015.
Pedestrian fatalities accounted for approximately 16 percent of traffic deaths throughout the United States in 2016.
There was a 9.5 percent increase in the number of pedestrians who died from 2014 (4,910) to 2015 (5,376). Additionally, 2015 saw the most pedestrian fatalities in a one-year period since 1996.
Between 2001 and 2010, 32,873 male pedestrians and 14,519 female pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents, for a total of 47,392 pedestrian fatalities in that time period.

Pedestrian Accident Injury Statistics

Almost 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments after sustaining nonfatal accident-related injuries in 2015.

Pedestrian Accidents by Age

People over the age of 65 made up 19 percent of all pedestrian fatalities in 2015. They also accounted for 13 percent of all pedestrian injuries in traffic accidents.
Of the children younger than 15 who died in traffic accidents in 2015, 21 percent were pedestrians.
Children between the ages of 10 and 14 accounted for more injuries in pedestrian accidents than any other demographic in 2015.
Children between the ages of 0 and 4, as well as those between 5 and 9, accounted for more deaths in pedestrian accidents than any other demographic in 2015.
The average age of those on foot who died in traffic accidents in 2015 was 47.
In 2015, people who were at least 65 years old accounted for approximately 19 percent of all pedestrian deaths (1,002 out of 5,376) and 13 percent of all pedestrian injuries (roughly 9,000 out of 70,000).

Alcohol-Related Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Of the fatal pedestrian accidents that occurred in 2016, 48 percent involved alcohol impairment on the part of either the motorist or the person on foot.
In almost 50 percent of all pedestrian accidents that resulted in one or more fatalities in 2015, either the person on foot or the motorist was impaired. In 34 percent of these accidents, the pedestrian registered a blood alcohol concentration of at least 0.08. In 15 percent of these accidents, the motorist registered a blood alcohol concentration of at least 0.08.

Hit and Run Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In 2016, approximately 1 out of 5 pedestrians who was killed was struck by a hit-and-run motorist.
In 2015, approximately 19 percent of pedestrians who died in traffic accidents were struck by a hit-and-run motorist.

Pedestrian Accident Risk Factor Statistics

When motorists travel at higher speeds, they increase both the likelihood of striking a pedestrian and the severity of any resulting injuries.
Most pedestrian fatalities happen in urban locations and at non-intersection spots. They are also more likely to happen at night.
In 2015, 76 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents happened in urban locations, while 24 percent happened in rural locations.

In 2016, California, Texas, and Florida saw the most fatal pedestrian accidents, with 867, 672, and 652, respectively.
In 2016, the states that saw the fewest fatal pedestrian accidents were Vermont with 4, Wyoming with 5, South Dakota with 6, North Dakota with 7, and Washington, D.C. with 9.
In 2016, New Mexico had the highest fatality rate for pedestrian accidents per 100,000 population. Their rate was 3.51. Florida had the second highest rate at 3.16, while the average rate across the country was 1.85.
In 2016, Nebraska had the lowest fatality rate for pedestrian accidents per 100,000 population. Their rate was 0.63. Vermont had the second lowest rate at 0.64.
